Western Mindanao Youth Leaders called to take on the Journey of Ninoy and Cory Aquino in 2012

NCAF and NCACL are proud to announce the partnership with the Ateneo de Zamboanga University (ADZU), Zamboanga Basilan Sulu Tawi-Tawi Associaion of Private Schools (ZAMBASULTAPS) and the Catholic Educational Association of the Philippines Region 9 (CEAP IX) in bringing the youth leadership program to the South.

In the Philippines today, there is an underlying culture of patronage, corruption and deceit.  This has resulted in broken institutions, poverty, mistrust of government among citizens, and abuse of the underprivileged. A vacuum of moral leadership in critical areas of national life is impeding the country’s progress.

“We have been truly blessed on our first year of implementing our core youth formation program,” NCAF President and Executive Director Rafael C. Lopa says.  “For 2012, we are grateful that we are going to have our fifth batch of young leaders that will hopefully transform Philippine society.”

Using Ninoy and Cory Aquino as role models, the program seeks to reintroduce spirituality as a major foundation for Filipino leadership. Harnessing their innate values systems, the participants take part in a process of self-reflection that will ultimately lead to self-transformation and self-commitment for others and country.

“We are excited for the upcoming batch as we would like to engage not only Christian youth, but Muslim youth as well.  Leadership, sacrifice and spirituality cut across religion – embracing a life of service and mission is a challenge to all Filipinos,” Lopa shares.

Together with program partners, Cebu Pacific Air and White Knight Hotel Intramuros, the program invites the youth leaders to undergo a 3-day transformative experience and be living witnesses of leadership.  It is the hope of the Foundation that the young persons will be moved to commit to a life of service and mission through effective and impactful community work. The objectives of the program are:

  • To reintroduce models of leadership based from the lives of Ninoy and Cory Aquino
  • To realize that spirituality, faith and love are values that anchor one’s life
  • To build communal experiences in spirituality with other youth leaders
  • To respond to a life of love through the call for action
  • To appreciate a life of sacrifice that is deeply rooted in one’s faith

On the 100th year of ADZU, NCAF joins in the celebration as a partner in trailblazing Philippine history.  “The contributions of Ninoy and Cory Aquino to this country are being recognized even here in Mindanao,” ADZU President Fr. Antonio Moreno, S. J. reveals.  “As we continue to advocate for peace and development in the region, youth leadership development is key in the efforts.  Through the program, we hope to transcend religious boundaries and create a community that is united in uplifting the region.”

The Ninoy and Cory Aquino Leadership Journey is open to all Filipino citizens residing in Western Mindanao (Zamboanga, Basilan, Sulu and Tawi-Tawi provinces), 18 – 21 yrs. old, and at least a college sophomore (or the equivalent) at the time of the application period.

Ninoy and Cory Aquino Foundation (NCAF)

The Ninoy and Cory Aquino Foundation traces its roots to the Benigno S. Aquino, Jr. Foundation (BSAF), established by the late Senator’s widow in November 1983 to perpetuate his legacy.  BSAF became her vehicle for continuing to engage non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and people’s organizations (POs) that played a key role in empowering communities and reviving democratic institutions alongside her administration.

On August 21, 2008, BSAF launched the iamninoy campaign with the help of creative and merchandise partners to introduce Ninoy Aquino to new generations of Filipinos as a fitting commemoration of his 25th death anniversary. Using the senator’s iconic eyeglasses as its visual signature, the campaign invited young Filipinos to look at society “through Ninoy’s eyes” and to surface the selfless hero inside them.

Today, NCAF seeks to build on the legacy of Ninoy and Cory by supporting activities that embody the spirit of People Power as a strong and positive force for social change in a robust democracy.

Ateneo de Zamboanga University (ADZU)

The Ateneo de Zamboanga began in 1912 as Escuela Catolica, a parochial school run by Spanish Jesuits with Fr. Manuel Sauras, S.J. as the first director. In 1916, the Escuela Catolica became the Ateneo de Zamboanga.

In 1930, the American Jesuits took over from the Spanish Jesuits with Fr. Thomas Murray, S.J. as the first American director. The first high school students graduated from Ateneo in 1932.

The school was closed during World War II and reopened in 1947 with a nipa-sawali building on a new site outside the poblacion called Jardin de Chino along Camino Nuevo. And in 1948, the school was officially recognized as a Jesuit school separate from the parish.

The post liberation years were a period of rapid physical, curricular, and enrollment expansion for the school. A college was established in 1952 and the graduate school in 1976.

In the 1980s, Fr. Ernesto A. Carretero, SJ started the work to acquire for the Ateneo de Zamboanga a university status. The years of hard work finally paid off when, on August 20, 2001, the Ateneo de Zamboanga was declared a university by the Commission on Higher Education under the leadership of

Fr. William H. Kreutz, SJ. The current University President is Fr. Antonio F Moreno, SJ who continues the tradition of articulating the thrust of the Ateneo de Zamboanga, she being the Jesuit University in Western Mindanao.

The year 2012 is a significant year in the heartbeat of the Ateneo de Zamboanga University for it is her centennial jubilee. A hundred years of striving for academic excellence, of embracing Ignatian Spirituality, and of engaged citizenship.

The motto of the University summarizes all of these: Pro Deo et Patria (For God and Country) hence, for all that has been done, is being done and for future endeavors, it is and will for always be in the service of God and Country.
